Which size Aubisque is right for you?

The Aubisque is designed for bikes where handlebar disassembly or rotation (as required in the Tourmalet and Ventoux respectively) is restricted or undesirable, such as highly integrated aero road bikes and TT/tri bikes. Because the bike is loaded in with the handlebars in the straight-ahead position, selecting the correct size is a two-step process involving both height and width.

Step 1: Choose your height (Measurement A)

The height of the box is determined by Measurement A. For the Aubisque, this is measured from the centre of the bottom bracket to the very top of your seat tube. Do NOT include your saddle or seat post.

  • Choose Low height for a Measurement A of 555mm or less.
  • Choose Mid height for a Measurement A up to 595mm.
  • Choose High height for a Measurement A up to 635mm.
  • Choose Max height for a Measurement A up to 675mm.

Step 2: Choose your width (Measurement H)

The width is determined by Measurement H, which is the total width of your handlebars at their widest point (e.g. taking into account any flare or the position of the shifters if they exceed that).

  • Choose Standard width for handlebars up to 420 mm wide.
  • Choose Wide width for handlebars over 420 mm wide (up to a maximum of 480 mm).

Measurement F: Bar reach (165 mm or less)

Measurement F is the horizontal distance from the centre of your front axle to the furthest forward point of your bike, which is usually the tip of your brake levers. Do not include aero extensions as these will be too long and need to be removed or rotated down for travel.

For all Aubisque models, this measurement must be 165 mm or less. If your cockpit extends further than this, please contact us to discuss potential adjustments or alternative models.

Measurement C: Wheelbase (952 mm - 1080 mm)

The Aubisque is designed to accommodate a wheelbase between 952 mm and 1080mm. This range covers the vast majority of performance-oriented road and triathlon frames.

Measurement G: Cockpit Height

The vertical distance from the centre of your front wheel axle to the top-most point of your bars as shown. You only need to check this if it is greater than Dimension A + 120mm.

Which finish is right for you?

Pavé Grey Standard Finish
Pavé Grey is our new standard finish replacing our Waves graphics: a carefully chosen enhanced powder coat in a sleek grey that suits every box we build. The structural frame sections are silver anodised, giving a clean contrast against the Pavé panels while offering their own protection.

Enhanced Powder Coat Finish
Our Enhanced Powder Coat Finish is a popular upgrade, offering nearly 100 stunning colours. Matt works great for light shades, while gloss excels for darker colours. Pick a colour to make your box as unique as you!

Which colour is right for you?

Choose from a selection of rich, varied colours crafted to withstand the rigours of travel and match your own personal style. Simply select matt, satin or gloss, and then the colour of your choice. In our opinion, matt is great for more understated colours, while gloss excels for vivid colours.

Larger versions of each swatch can be seen here, but please note the colour swatches are representative. Screen colours differ slightly from physical finishes and depending on the choice of matt, satin or gloss. Looking for vinyl deal colours? Visit this page.

Which axle sizes should you pick for your Aubisque?

The Aubisque is engineered to provide a secure transport solution for your bike, ensuring your frame remains isolated from external impacts. To achieve this, the internal mounting system's dummy hubs must match your bike's specific axle standards, as this is what holds your bike inside the box.

For the front axle, you will typically require a 12 x 100 mm thru-axle for modern disc-brake aero bikes, or a standard quick-release (QR) if you are running a rim-brake setup. For the rear axle, the standard options are 12 x 142 mm for disc models or standard QR for traditional rim-brake frames. A track option is also available. Choosing the correct size provides the most secure interface, protecting your frame and integrated components from any lateral movement.

What are nameplates?

Buxumbox nameplates are premium laser-etched aluminium panels securely attached next to one of the handles on the top half of each box. As well as the custom details you provide, each nameplate comes with a serial number unique to your box.

Which wheelbag size is right for you?

The Small wheelbag is engineered for the road and light gravel market. It comfortably accommodates wheels up to 700c with tyre widths up to 42mm. If you are running a classic road configuration or a versatile all-road tyre, this size provides a snug, secure fit that prevents movement and protects against impact.

For those heading off-road or running high-volume rubber, the Large wheelbag is designed for 29-inch mountain bike wheels and wide-clearance gravel setups. It handles tyre widths of 43mm and above with ease, offering the extra internal volume required for chunky treads and wider hub spacing.

Both sizes feature heavy-duty zips, velcro panels for the anti-crush bar to pass through, and reinforced contact points, providing a professional-grade solution for transporting your most critical components.

Please note that large wheelbags are perfectly capable of holding smaller diameter wheels.

Standard Pavé Grey Finish

Some bikes were never designed with conventional bike boxes or bags in mind. The Canyon Speedmax. The Colnago Y1RS. The Trek Speed Concept. The Cervelo S5. The Factor One. Aero road and time trial machines with integrated cockpits that can't be rotated, removed, or rearranged without a workshop and significant patience.

The Aubisque was engineered specifically for these bikes. A taller and wider-format version of our best-selling Ventoux, it gives your bars room to stay attached and face forwards - not angled or rotated. Remove the wheels, aero extensions if fitted, and seatpost if required. Load the bike straight in. That's it.

Available in four height options to suit different frame sizes and builds, and capable of carrying up to four wheels comfortably inside the box alongside accessories. See which Which Size? link in the Bike Box Size menu for more information on how to measure your bike.

Unlike competitor boxes with similar external dimensions, every millimetre of the Aubisque's internal volume is engineered to be usable, because when you're travelling with a serious time trial build, 'close enough' isn't good enough.

Hand-built in the UK from 6061-T6 aluminium. All four wheels caster for precise control through airports, even when fully loaded. TSA-approved key locks throughout. Built to last a cycling lifetime.

Available in Pavé Grey or our Enhanced Powder Coat Finish with a huge range of colours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my bike fit in? What box do I need?

We have all the bases covered – there are four distinct models according to your type of bike and preference for size vs pack time. On each of the product pages there are measurement guides for each box to help you pick a size.

The Aubisque is our dedicated aero road, triathlon and time trial bike box. It’s been designed for bikes with integrated cockpits that can’t be disassembled easily.

The Ventoux will also accommodate seat tubes up to 635mm, covering many ISPs – and for giants, we can produce extended height versions on a build-to-order basis.

The Stelvio is our MTB box, with standard size for XC and trail bikes or long wheelbase option for big hitter downhill/enduro bikes.

The Tourmalet is our most compact box, requiring most disassembly (handlebars need to be removed). But it is the smallest and therefore lightest.

We’d always recommend using the smallest box the bike can fit in to – for that reason we even provide three height options for the compact Tourmalet model.

How long will it take to build my box?

Our lead times are typically 4-6 weeks from placing your order to your order being ready to ship. The reason we ask for a travel date is to ensure we don't take orders that we can't get customers in time to avoid disappointment. We can sometimes flex this and prioritise extremely urgent orders, so please just ask us if this is the case.

How long will it take for my box to arrive?

Typical delivery times following the initial 4-6 build lead time:

  • UK: 48 hours
  • EU: 4-5 days
  • US: 7-10 days
  • ROW: 7-10 days

We only use trusted, high quality shipping partners in FedEx and DHL.

Why aluminium?

It’s a wonderful sustainable material – extremely strong in the grades we use (mainly 6061, as used on high-end frames and in aerospace applications), light weight (panels are just 0.5mm thick), versatile (we use it as sheet, extrusions, turnings and stampings) corrosion resistant and eminently recyclable. And oh, it looks good too! Plus, we an offer an amazing range of powder coat colours too.

Will it dent or scratch?

Yes it will, but only in a good way. And that’s also what makes aluminium such a great material – each cycling journey will add a patina of use and earn the odd distinctive scar but without impacting strength or structure. We like to think we look better with age.

Of course, no material is indestructible and there is always a balance to be struck between strength and weight. If a panel is breached due to, for instance, wilful neglect on the part of a baggage handler then it would not spell the end for your box – panel repair/replacement is straightforward and supported by the factory.

Our experience is that a Buxumbox can take far more abuse than moulded plastic or semi-rigid boxes (and is repairable too!)

I hate packing - please tell me that packing your boxes is painless?

It’s painless. In fact, making these boxes simple to use, highly versatile and quick to pack is a design fundamental. You don’t need a degree in applied mental gymnastics here – we’re all about these boxes being intuitive to use. The Tourmalet takes less than ten minutes to pack or unpack and the Ventoux under five minutes, with the absolute minimum of disassembly required.

Will airlines charge for a bike box?

Probably yes, but that's true of every bike box on the market, but policies vary by airline. The good news is that there is a trend by airlines to offer transparent pricing polices for items of Sporting Goods rather than simply applying excess baggage rules.

You can normally find policies and rates by searching for Sporting Goods or Bicycles on your airline’s website.

Can you produce custom boxes?

Yes – within certain physical limits and the limits of physics! As well as producing custom sizes and hardware features for large or unusual bikes (even tandems), we can provide custom decals and logos – for an individual individual or a club/team.

The most popular customisation feature is to have the box powder-coated in a colour of the customer’s choice – examples of recent production can be found on our blog page and Facebook.

Please contact us on info@buxumbox.com with your specific requirements.
