Which size Stelvio is right for you?

Selecting the correct Stelvio size is straightforward and depends primarily on your bike's wheelbase. Because mountain bikes vary significantly in length across disciplines, we offer two distinct box size options to ensure a perfect fit without unnecessary travel weight.

Step 1: Measure your wheelbase (Measurement C)

Measurement C is the horizontal distance between the centres of your front and rear axles. This is the most critical measurement for selecting your Stelvio.

  • Choose the Standard size if your wheelbase is up to 1215 mm. This size is ideal for the majority of modern trail and XC bikes.
  • Choose the Long Wheelbase size if your wheelbase is between 1216 mm and 1410 mm. This is specifically designed for the longest modern geometries, including enduro and downhill rigs.

Step 2: Check your bike's height (Measurement A)

Measurement A is the distance from the centre of the bottom bracket to the top of the seat tube. For both Stelvio models, the internal height accommodates most setups once the seat post is removed. However, if you have a dropper post, you can often leave it in the frame and simply lower it to its shortest position. If tallest part of the saddle still exceeds the height of the box when you measure, you will need to remove the post (with the cable still attached) and secure it alongside the frame.

Step 3: Check your fork and handlebars

The Stelvio is designed to accommodate bars when removed and secured to the side of the frame with straps, and long-travel suspension forks.

  • Handlebar Width: The internal width of both boxes is 360 mm, providing ample room for the frame and components once the bars are detached.
  • Fork Length: If you are running a long-travel fork (170mm+), you may need to use a simple compression strap or remove air to lower the front end slightly for a perfect fit.

Step 4: Check your cockpit-to-axle measurements (Measurements B1 and B2)

Finally, check the cockpit-to-axle measurements to ensure the frame fits within the outer shell with the bars removed.

  • B1: This is the linear distance from the centre of the front wheel axle to the top cap on the steerer tube. The maximum is 770 mm.
  • B2: This is the linear distance from the centre of the front wheel axle to the highest point on the stem. The maximum is 770 mm.
Which finish is right for you?

Pavé Grey Standard Finish
Pavé Grey is our new standard finish replacing our Waves graphics: a carefully chosen enhanced powder coat in a sleek grey that suits every box we build. The structural frame sections are silver anodised, giving a clean contrast against the Pavé panels while offering their own protection.

Enhanced Powder Coat Finish
Our Enhanced Powder Coat Finish is a popular upgrade, offering nearly 100 stunning colours. Matt works great for light shades, while gloss excels for darker colours. Pick a colour to make your box as unique as you!

Which colour is right for you?

Choose from a selection of rich, varied colours crafted to withstand the rigours of travel and match your own personal style. Simply select matt, satin or gloss, and then the colour of your choice. In our opinion, matt is great for more understated colours, while gloss excels for vivid colours.

Larger versions of each swatch can be seen here, but please note the colour swatches are representative. Screen colours differ slightly from physical finishes and depending on the choice of matt, satin or gloss. Looking for vinyl deal colours? Visit this page.

Which axle sizes should you pick for your Stelvio?

The Stelvio is purpose-built to accommodate the substantial proportions of modern mountain bikes, from XC to downhill. It's important to choose the right size axle sizes for your bike so we can supply appropriate dummy hubs to secure your bike to the mounting brackets.

For the front axle, most bikes commonly require the 15 x 110mm (Boost) thru-axle mount option. However, if you are running a heavy-duty downhill fork, you may need a 20 x 110mm (either standard or Boost) adapter. 15 x 100 mm and 15 x 150 mm are also available.

For the rear axle, the current standard for long-travel bikes is 12 x 148mm (Boost), though some dedicated DH frames may require a 12 x 157 mm (Super Boost) setup. 12 x 142 mm and 12 x 197 mm (Fat Bike) options are also available. Please verify your hub spacing to ensure the box provides the rigid, tailored support your bike needs.

What are nameplates?

Buxumbox nameplates are premium laser-etched aluminium panels securely attached next to one of the handles on the top half of each box. As well as the custom details you provide, each nameplate comes with a serial number unique to your box.

Which wheelbag size is right for you?

The Small wheelbag is engineered for the road and light gravel market. It comfortably accommodates wheels up to 700c with tyre widths up to 42mm. If you are running a classic road configuration or a versatile all-road tyre, this size provides a snug, secure fit that prevents movement and protects against impact.

For those heading off-road or running high-volume rubber, the Large wheelbag is designed for 29-inch mountain bike wheels and wide-clearance gravel setups. It handles tyre widths of 43mm and above with ease, offering the extra internal volume required for chunky treads and wider hub spacing.

Both sizes feature heavy-duty zips, velcro panels for the anti-crush bar to pass through, and reinforced contact points, providing a professional-grade solution for transporting your most critical components.

Please note that large wheelbags are perfectly capable of holding smaller diameter wheels.

Standard Pavé Grey Finish

Modern mountain bike geometry has outgrown most bike boxes. Longer wheelbases, slacker head angles, and extended front centres mean the box that used to work probably doesn't anymore. The Stelvio was designed specifically for this.

Two distinct size options ensure every rig - from nimble XC bikes to the longest, slackest downhill machines - has a proper home.

The Standard size Stelvio is purpose-built for mountain bikes with wheelbases up to 1215 mm. Robust, adaptable, and built for the rigours of international transit, it's well suited to XC and smaller trail bikes.

The Long Wheelbase version is only dedicated LWB MTB bike box on the market. Designed for bikes with wheelbases from 1216 mm to 1410 mm, if your bike has outgrown every other box, the Stelvio Long Wheelbase was built for it. Twin anti-crush bars with three mounting positions provide structural integrity for the biggest of enduro and downhill builds.

See which Which Size? link in the Bike Box Size menu for more information on how to measure your bike to decide which size is right for you.

Both models are compatible with all current mountain bike axle standards: Thru Axle, Lefty, and Fat Bike setups. (Lefty requires an additional mounting bracket, available as an accessory). Security is handled by a series of heavy-duty latches and a TSA-approved key lock, meaning airport inspections are thorough, not destructive.

If your riding style changes, the box changes with you. Switch the front and rear mounting brackets - available as accessory packs - and convert the Stelvio for road, TT, or gravel use.

Hand-built in the UK from 6061-T6 aluminium. Four inline skate wheels with sealed bearings. Rear wheels fixed; front wheels caster for one-handed control through airports.

Available in Pavé Grey or our Enhanced Powder Coat Finish with a wide range of custom colours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my bike fit in? What box do I need?

We have all the bases covered – there are four distinct models according to your type of bike and preference for size vs pack time. On each of the product pages there are measurement guides for each box to help you pick a size.

The Aubisque is our dedicated aero road, triathlon and time trial bike box. It’s been designed for bikes with integrated cockpits that can’t be disassembled easily.

The Ventoux will also accommodate seat tubes up to 635mm, covering many ISPs – and for giants, we can produce extended height versions on a build-to-order basis.

The Stelvio is our MTB box, with standard size for XC and trail bikes or long wheelbase option for big hitter downhill/enduro bikes.

The Tourmalet is our most compact box, requiring most disassembly (handlebars need to be removed). But it is the smallest and therefore lightest.

We’d always recommend using the smallest box the bike can fit in to – for that reason we even provide three height options for the compact Tourmalet model.

How long will it take to build my box?

Our lead times are typically 4-6 weeks from placing your order to your order being ready to ship. The reason we ask for a travel date is to ensure we don't take orders that we can't get customers in time to avoid disappointment. We can sometimes flex this and prioritise extremely urgent orders, so please just ask us if this is the case.

How long will it take for my box to arrive?

Typical delivery times following the initial 4-6 build lead time:

  • UK: 48 hours
  • EU: 4-5 days
  • US: 7-10 days
  • ROW: 7-10 days

We only use trusted, high quality shipping partners in FedEx and DHL.

Why aluminium?

It’s a wonderful sustainable material – extremely strong in the grades we use (mainly 6061, as used on high-end frames and in aerospace applications), light weight (panels are just 0.5mm thick), versatile (we use it as sheet, extrusions, turnings and stampings) corrosion resistant and eminently recyclable. And oh, it looks good too! Plus, we an offer an amazing range of powder coat colours too.

Will it dent or scratch?

Yes it will, but only in a good way. And that’s also what makes aluminium such a great material – each cycling journey will add a patina of use and earn the odd distinctive scar but without impacting strength or structure. We like to think we look better with age.

Of course, no material is indestructible and there is always a balance to be struck between strength and weight. If a panel is breached due to, for instance, wilful neglect on the part of a baggage handler then it would not spell the end for your box – panel repair/replacement is straightforward and supported by the factory.

Our experience is that a Buxumbox can take far more abuse than moulded plastic or semi-rigid boxes (and is repairable too!)

I hate packing - please tell me that packing your boxes is painless?

It’s painless. In fact, making these boxes simple to use, highly versatile and quick to pack is a design fundamental. You don’t need a degree in applied mental gymnastics here – we’re all about these boxes being intuitive to use. The Tourmalet takes less than ten minutes to pack or unpack and the Ventoux under five minutes, with the absolute minimum of disassembly required.

Will airlines charge for a bike box?

Probably yes, but that's true of every bike box on the market, but policies vary by airline. The good news is that there is a trend by airlines to offer transparent pricing polices for items of Sporting Goods rather than simply applying excess baggage rules.

You can normally find policies and rates by searching for Sporting Goods or Bicycles on your airline’s website.

Can you produce custom boxes?

Yes – within certain physical limits and the limits of physics! As well as producing custom sizes and hardware features for large or unusual bikes (even tandems), we can provide custom decals and logos – for an individual individual or a club/team.

The most popular customisation feature is to have the box powder-coated in a colour of the customer’s choice – examples of recent production can be found on our blog page and Facebook.
