Airline Baggage Allowance for Bikes: What to Know Before You Fly

Some full-service airlines, including British Airways, United, Delta, Emirates and Etihad, accept a packed bicycle as part of your checked baggage allowance, provided it meets their bicycle-specific weight, size and packing rules. Budget airlines such as easyJet, Ryanair, Wizz Air and Norwegian usually charge a separate sports-equipment fee. A low-cost carrier is not necessarily less accommodating, as some publish more generous bicycle allowances than full-service airlines.

Can I take my bike as a baggage on a plane?

Many carriers allow up to 23kg per checked item in economy, while some permit up to 32kg. A 23kg limit can be tight once a hard-shell bike box and bicycle are combined, so weigh the complete packed box before travelling. Dimensions are often the greater obstacle. Standard checked baggage is commonly limited to 158cm in total, but many airlines apply separate, larger limits to bicycles and sporting equipment.

Qantas is a clear exception. Its published bicycle-box limit is 140 × 30 × 80cm, which is too narrow for a Buxumbox. Do not rely on discretion at the check-in desk if your box exceeds an airline’s published limit. Obtain written confirmation from the airline or choose a carrier whose policy clearly accommodates it.

What does that mean for a Buxumbox bike box?

Using our most popular box as an example, the Ventoux Standard measures 134 × 87 × 36cm and weighs approximately 15kg, while the Ventoux Wide measures 134 × 87 × 41cm and weighs approximately 15.5kg. Both fall within the published bicycle or sporting-equipment size limits of airlines including British Airways, Emirates, Delta, American Airlines, Etihad, Air Canada and WestJet, subject to the packed weight, fare, route and aircraft being used.

Airline compatibility can also differ between Buxumbox models and sizes. Singapore Airlines’ published limits accommodate the Tourmalet Low and the Low and Mid versions of both the Standard and Wide Aubisque. The Ventoux, Stelvio and taller Tourmalet and Aubisque variants slightly exceed one of Singapore Airlines’ published dimensions and should be confirmed with the airline before booking.

Qantas publishes an unusually restrictive bicycle-box limit of 140 × 30 × 80cm. None of the current Buxumbox range is formally within all three dimensions, although the Tourmalet Low exceeds the width limit by only 1cm. Customers travelling with Qantas should obtain confirmation that their particular box will be accepted.

As with any large item of luggage (including bike boxes and bags from other manufacturers), past experience should not be treated as a guarantee, however. Published airline limits, aircraft capacity and airport-specific restrictions ultimately determine whether a box will be accepted so always check.

Don’t forget the fine print

Several airlines require or strongly request advance notice when travelling with a bicycle. British Airways asks passengers to notify it more than 72 hours before departure. Lufthansa requires sports baggage to be registered no later than 72 hours beforehand, while Cathay Pacific asks passengers to contact it at least 72 hours before departure. Emirates requests at least 24 hours’ notice and KLM requires bicycle transport to be reserved no later than 48 hours before departure. Even where advance notice is not formally required, registering your bicycle is sensible because hold capacity may be limited.

Delta and American Airlines waive oversize fees for bicycles within their published 115-linear-inch, or 292cm, limits, although overweight charges can still apply above 23kg. United accepts bicycles within its published limits but applies oversize charges when the packed item exceeds 62 linear inches. Electric bicycles are commonly prohibited as passenger baggage, sometimes even when the battery has been removed. Travellers with an e-bike should check the airline’s exact rules and expect to use a specialist cargo service where necessary.

Notify the carrier if required. And travel with the confidence that comes from having the right bike box for the job.
